Have also posted this in How Things Work .. is there a boffin out there who can tell me why in my Miele combination oven, the metal tray does not cause a problem when on microwave function ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Not only does your oven have the metal tray, the entire inside of the oven is made from metal. It may be covered with a layer of plastic materail to make it easier to keep clean and general esthetics but is made from metal to contain the generated microwaves. You can use aluminium foil in the oven as well... just don't place it close to any of the walls and dont "wad" it up into any kind of a ball. Many frozen food containers meant for microwave use are made of aluminium, by the way. Additionally, the grid in the door you use to view the inside is metal... again, to contain the microwaves...
