has anybody ever heard of this before.This picture was taken just a few miles up the road to where i live.

As a former meteorological observer, I take exception to the explanation given in this newspaper article. Yes I agree that it is a mirage effect caused by refraction through a denser (cooler) layer of air close to the sea surface.


The terms 'sun dogs' and 'parhelia' (also called 'mock suns') are applied to multiple images of the sun, but through the mechanism of reflection from the plane surfaces of ice crystals at high altitude. Also, 'sun dogs' or 'parhelia' form at an angle of 22.5 degrees from the sun, either horizontally or vertically from the real sun.


This image shows the second solar image much closer than 22.5 degrees and is therefore best explained as a mirage.

I will try to get a bigger photo.(:)In the actual newspaper the image is bigger.perhaps its best to scan it.
