Is it possible that nothing is actually something?

I have a thought-provoking book on my shelf from New Scientist that concludes that nothing is nothing.

It is more than possible, in quantum physics it is real. 99%+ of everything is ostensibly vacuum, but that contains its own energy, dark matter and possibly quantum dimensions that link with other realities and universes.
One example is if you merge two out of phase sine waves they equal to nothing as the peaks and troughs cancel out. Where does the sound go then?
