long operation

I'm due to have my ear reconstructed next year, the operation will take between 11 and 12 hours. The longest I've been out for is 4 hours before. I was wondering what happens about needing the toilet while I'm under anaesthetic, will I have to have bags fitted etc or do they give you something to stop you from having er, bodily functions. I ask because I have IBS. I realise I will not have eaten or drank anything for 12 hours or so beforehand.

Would they not give you a catheter? I am not certain, but that is what I have heard from others.

Yes rampart you are spot on with the catheter bit,and I'm sure clarabel they will perhaps give you an enema or perhaps some medication to make sure the bowel will be "quiet" during the surgery.Good luck with everything,hope it all goes well.

they should definately catheterise you for an operation of that length, as they will be giving you intravenous fluids to keep you hydrated, and as we all know, what goes in must come out!! Dont worry im sure they will take good care of you, good luck.

Thankyou for your answers, I really had no idea, I remember after the 4 hour op being on a saline drip and needing the toilet every 5 minutes so maybe it's almost a relief to know I may have a catheter :S

I wouldn't think you would need the toilet if you are asleep. You don't go to toilet during the night when you are sleep. I have slept for 12 hours before in a trot and didn't wake to use the loo.
