Local Councils - Waste Recycling or just dumping?

Anybody see the BBC Fiona Bruce programme about recycling? Apparently it seems that one waste disposal companuy which handle recycling for local authorities in the South East may be shipping mixed waste to the Far East for disposal in landfill sites which had been separated out by local residents for recycling?

I'm writing to my District Councillor to enquire who handles my local authority recycling and find out what actually happens to it after I put it in my green & brown boxes. I used to work for a local authority and was friendly with the Recycling Officer and since then I have never bothered recycling again - half the time it was too wet or they missed the collection and then sent the lorry back just to collect one box which really negates the ecological savings. Also if they are so worried about the environment why are they so reluctant to supply recyclable black bin bags ? Because they are more expensive that's why. What they should be doing is stopping supermarkets from the ridiculous overpackaging, and for us to put pressure on them to use biodegradable packaging which they seem to manage on organic produce but not on other things. Will get off my soap box now!

I was very shocked and disappointed when I heard that. I agree with lady p gold about over packaging items, but I also am very peeved about the deception behind the entire recycling programme - the government should be held accountable. Thanks for the link wendys.
