A micelle forms when a layer of molecules, such as the phospholipids that form cell membranes, are placed in water. Because of the polar properties of the molecules the hydrophobic lipid tails point towards one another leaving the hydrophilic phosphate heads in contact with the water. In effect this creates spheres which can contain substances, such as sections of DNA.
