Question For Opticians And Dispensing Opticians
14 Answers
I am in receipt of guarantee pension credit and am about to book another eye test. Last year I was charged over £500 even with me supplying the frames. I remember a few years ago being charged nothing at all. So are prescriptions free to people in receipt of certain benefits?

Barry has basically provided the answer that you need. You're entitled to an Optical Voucher, which will go at least part way towards the cost of your new specs. See here for the figures:

However, if you're getting charged £500 without even needing frames, I strongly suggest that it's time to think about choosing a different optician!
I used Asda Opticians about three months ago. I got my eyes tested for free (because I'm over 60) and ordered my new specs at the same time. They're varifocals, with scratch resistant and anti-reflective coatings. (I could have had a tint too, if I'd wanted, at no extra cost). The price I paid for them, including the frames, was just £45.
