theres also overlapping ones formed from 2 ... and squares must count as rectangles.... so more than 20 ,,,, but id need to print off and mark up

I'm including "square" in the term "rectangle".
I found it too difficult to count the rectangles in the figure.
I tackled the problem by starting with a blank sheet and drawing the large squares, a line segment at a time, noting the new rectangles formed by each segment. I found 41 rectangles.
We know it must be an odd number because the figure is symmetrical about two axes except for the small square at the centre.

The answer I was given is eleven squares and thirty-two rectangles making a grand total of 43 !!

Isn't a square just a special case of a rectangle where it's sides are of the same length, as circles are special cases of an ellipse.
