Intelligently Designed Universe?

Intelligent design, as one sees it from a scientific point of view, seems to be quite real. This is a very special universe: it’s remarkable that it came out just this way. If the laws of physics weren’t just the way they are, we couldn’t be here at all. The sun couldn’t be there, the laws of gravity and nuclear laws and magnetic theory, quantum mechanics, and so on have to be just the way they are for us to be here.

Design Is the controversial word here. It implies forethought has been used by someone / something to produce an end result. Intelligent evolution might be a better phrase, certainly in steering the debate away from the 'who did it then?' Question.

I was trying to avoid Khandro's comment 'If the laws of physics weren’t just the way they are'. It's a red herring, not only for the reason Naomi has pointed out but for the fact that the more we understand about physics (especially on a quantum level) the more we realise we don't actually know what the laws of physics are, or indeed whether there are any.

The last item in the list — the initial entropy of the universe — shows an astounding degree of fine-tuning. all those figures are fine, but they're based on our perception of physics at this present point in scientific research. The creator theory, which you seem hell bent on perusing, is using the intelligence of the ancients in explaining the universe "it can't just have happened, there must be a God (or Gods)".

If the laws of physics differ in other areas of the universe, it follows that any life that might exist there probably couldn't exist in our bit.  Perhaps it's unwise to assume that all life is like us - or that it was all 'made' for beings like us.
