I wouldn't have had much idea. 2km maybe? 2 miles? 

Maybe they thought a guinea is 22 shillings instead of 21 and tried to use that.

piggy as with most of these the answer is irrelevant they. There is not a high profile race that is 5 miles let alone 22 miles, that's why it's a TWAU.

Tilly just about everyone knows about the grand national and that it's a long race and it's over 4 miles. So 22 would be out of the question.

If you don't know anything about horse racing, then you might think this is some sort of exceptional event, possibly archaic, perhaps a relay or run over stages.

Well, 22 miles is obviously a bit daft - but I wouldn't have known the answer was 1 mile.  I might have thought 2,000 gns. = 2 miles at 1k gns for each.
