tungsten

The filament of the standard lightbulb is made of tungsten steel, this heats up when agitated by electricity and gets so hot that it emits light.

In the near future the standard may well be replaced by the energy-saving fluorescent type bulb, where it is the fluorescent gas that emits the light.
