I bought a laptop in January and nearly every time I am using the Internet/Email the mouse freezes, along with the keyboard and then a fan kicks in. I called my support and they said it was caused by static build up. I was asked to hold down the power button until it shut the laptop down. Then remove the battery. Then hold the power button down for 30 seconds(?). Then replace the battery. I was then able to log on. Thi shas happended fairly regularly since and I take the same actions. My questions are:- 1)What causes the static to build up? 2) Does holding down the power button while the battery is disconnected release the static? 3) Should I really have to put up with this, bearing in mind the laptop is less than a month old? Thanks.

All you are doing by holding the power button down is forcing the PC to switch itself off, I suspect it's a known problem with the laptop and the support person is lying to you. More than likely a component (usually the CPU) is simply overheating and when you switch off for 30 seconds this gives it time to cool down.
If they still insist that it's a problem with static ask them why it wasn't designed well enough to stop this problem from occuring.
Good luck.

I agree with Jennifer, the clue that the fan kicks in at the same time suggests overheating rather than static and switching off and holding down the power button etc for so long is simply giving the laptop time to cool down.
Heat is the major poblem of laptops but as long as you are using it properly, i.e. not resting it on a soft pliable surface thereby stopping the air circulation, it should be designed adequately enough to overcome this.
Take it back nd ask for a refund or a different model.
