Why do Americans call petrol or fuel GAS? I reckon there is a different product specifically called gas which is not the same as petrol.

Gas - short for gasolene / gasoline. Petrol - short for petroleum spirit.


As the oil industry began, different words were used for different fractions of crude oil.

Errr... what about cars that run on LPG? We call it "LPG".


What we call 'petrol', the Americas (North & South) call it 'gas' short for gasolene or gazol - nothing to do with the gaseous phase of a substance.
