not 100% sure of why, think its friction of air over the car as you drive, the car is insulated by the rubber of the tyers. so when you get out and close the door you act as the earth and shock is passed through you to the earth.
you can by earthing strips in most car shops, ie halfords or motor world. these strips can be attached to the back of your cars bumper and hang down.
If you have non-conductive shoes, you should eliminate this problem. Synthetic clothes, even just a small bit (10% nylon or Lycra in your stretchy trousers, if you're into that!) will exacerbate the problem.

If you remember in time, don't touch the door or the car with your skin!
The only way to prevent this happening is to open the door and then a metal part of the door firmly and then get ou of the car whilst still holding the door. That way you'll earth yourself through your shoes and not get that static shock. Sad but you find these things out when you've been in the motor trade for 25+ years. Hope it helps

sorry that should have read - "hold the door firmly whilst you get out"

i give it a go...thanks all.

Been there, had it happen often. Found the best way was to get out of the car, and close the door by pushing on the window glass. Then, holding firmly the metal part of a key, touch it to the car body. You may see and hear the spark, but you won't get any shock. (Wise up your passenger about closing their door using the glass, too!)

hi stevie it happens to me too, I just turn round and shut the door with my bum :)
