Should my son appear on TV?
I've got four kids and the eldest (a 15 yr old) is mathematically gifted. He achieved an IQ of 162 (in an adult MENSA test) when he was just 10 and has outstanding mathematical abilities. As such, he's developed a bit of a reputation in his school and wider. Because of this he's been invited to appear in media - both TV and radio. He's not that bothered one way or the other. So we (my wife and I) are in something of a dilemma. Appearing in the media could be good for him to get a step ahead in life. However, we also don't want him to come across as some sort of freak show. It's a conundrum.

If you and he have a good relationship with the school, it might be worth asking their advice too.
Is your son a member of MENSA? I know they have a special section for younger members. Maybe they could also help you decide what to do.

i see what you are saying - the child gifted on tv (depending on the show) are generally presented as something of a strange novelty item, even on news programmes regarding the intelligent young they generally seem to stress how different and peculiar the youngster is rather than how gifted they are.
I think he is old enough (and clearly smart enough) to make the decision for himself, if he is not bothered then i don't think you should be either let him decide if he wants to get involved.
As an aside what benefits do you think he would receive by being involved (sorry for asking but Im having trouble imagining any beyond some local fame)?

As noxlumus says, 'Let him Shine'. If he wants to do it then please encourage him. Highly intelligent children usually can deal very well with those in their peer group that mock them - they usually have a very good head on their shoulders when dealing with this. I am sure you must be very proud of him. Good luck to all of you.
