No idea what MrsJo's answer has to do with it.

Farmers use lime to make the soil alkaline. Most crops grow best in alkaline conditions. Artificial fertilisers tend to make the soil acidic.

that's because, on further inspection, it doesn't really! Browsed it quickly and thought it explained but now realise it was about stabilising soil for building not crops!
