Based on the average woman, what is the widest that a vagina can stretch to ? Thinking about childbirth, I know it can get to a certain point before a cut needs to be made, but on average, what is this point ?

Depends very much on the individual. I have always been a strapping 5' 8" as an adult, 42-44" hips, size 7 feet, but when I gave birth to my eight pounders I had to be cut first time and I tore the second (which was actually less painful afterwards).

But then I know one woman who is a tiny 5' and gave birth to a ten pounder without so much as a nick.

I remember a midwife saying that black and asian women tend to have more elastic skin than we white girls, and so have comparatively fewer problems in this area.
I had a 10lb 8oz baby - no stitches! OUCH!

Sounds painful !!! But does anyone know what the maximum width the vagina could stretch to (in inches/centimetres - I'm not fussy !) ? I know it's a strange question, but then most questions on here are !
I take it you have not seen that 'dodgy video' on the net, the one involving a lady involved in the adult film industry and a gentleman with an oily bald head.

Figure out the diameter of a fully grown male head and you may have your answer!!

You mean the one that's faked ? Yeah, I saw that about 5 years ago - apparently she was wearing a kind-of prosthetic rubber attachment that the bloke got his head into. I admit it does look real enough, but it's definitely a fake.
towards the end of labour 10 cm means fully dilated but there many reasons why an episiotomy may be required
Yeah but 10cms dilation refers to the cervix not the vagina. I'm not an expert (although i do want to be a midwife one day) but i wouldn't have thought that there could be a difinitive (sp?) answer to this question as it all depends on the individual woman as Saxy-jag says.

I think midwives go on experience as whether someone would need to be cut and can tell by looking how much pressure the skin is under and if it would stretch enough. Other than during childbirth i don't think there could be a way of finding out how far it could stretch and i don't think the midwives would have time to measure!

Hope it's true about Asian women as i am half indian!
does that mean you will only stretch half as much more?

sorry it's a poor joke
