In regulated circumstances, one liter of helium can lift about a gram; There are 453 grams in a pound, 8 pounds would be 3,624 grams. A standard balloon about 12 inches in diameter holds about 14 liters of helium and can lift lift 14 grams. Therefore, it would take 258.857143 balloons to lift your 8 pounds... voila!
For info On Braniac last week they needed the equivalent of 32070 balloons to lift John Tickle!
