If no-one studied science, then there would be nobody qualified to do many of the essential jobs such as doctors, dentists, drug development and manufacture. No progress would be made in electronics and many fields of engineering. In fact science comes into a huge proportion of all industry. Science is vital to progress.

One complaint I would have about scientists is that they waste a lot of money on useless research
- Eg. A few years ago they done research into the correct ratio of Strawberries to Cream ( Wimbledon happened to be on at the time) why in heavens name did we need to know that ?
Surely it is down to personal choice.

About 150 years ago a scientist showed the prime minister William Gladstone a curiosity. It was a small wire he could make revolve in a bath of mercury.
Gladstone looked confused at it and said "yes but what use is it?"
The scientist said "Sir one day you may tax it"
The scientist was Michael Faraday and the invention was the first electric motor
