If you mean the first car powered by petrol, it was Karl Benz in 1885 who patented a fully operational and useful car that would be recognisable today.

But Ettione Lenoir invented the first internal combustion engine in 1860 and in 1863 he put it in a vehicle. It was powered by gas and was very slow.
