Any point going to doctor for a label?
15 Answers
Having read up and having some intelligence, Im reaching the conclusion that my young daughter has Tourette's Syndrome.
She grunts and flings her arms and legs about, and shrugs, but its been quite interesting to see how she masks this when in company so as not to look strange.
So, is there any point at all in going to the doctor to pursue a diagnosis? There is no treatment as far as I can see, and she is just getting on with it (the shrugging doesnt go down too well at school mind!).
What do you think - good to have a label or stay out of the system?!

Personally if it was my son Id get him diagnosed and seek medical advice before relying on what i read up on on the net etc. If there was any possibility that it was something treatable thjen Id like to know that Id given him that chance of recovery.

I think 4get is right.
If it were me I would get a diagnosis ~ not only will it put your mind at rest (self diagnosis isn't always a good thing) it means you can get all the advice you need, medication etc.
My daughter has Aspergers Syndrome, and although I knew this for a long time before diagnosis, it was the diagnosis itself that helped me begin to accept and understand the condition..hope that makes sense?

I'd also say best to get a professional diagnosis. It will help you and her in the future, as joro says, nice for her to know that its a medical condition she has not just her being different with no apparent reason. It will help her to make other kids understand what she's doing and why if she can explain it. I dont think its fair for you to just say, oh i think she has it, it needs properly diagnosing. I wish you and she all the very best and im sure there is some form of medication that might ease symptoms.
Hi
I have a friend who's son has tourette's ( he is in his 20's now) and she was reluctant to go to the doctors. I think partly it was her own denial of the condition that stopped her going.
Once he was diagnosed.. he recieved extra help financially and also ... nore omportantly.. met other people with the condition. He learned that he was not a freak or stupid
