I think on a general not level (not legal) a guarantee is something which is associated with the whole object and warranty the constitue parts.

There fore if something covered under a guarantee went wrong it would be replaced in full but something covered under warranty would only have the faulty part fixed or replaced.

The two words have the same meaning. The 'W' was unknown to latin scholars, so they invented 'GU' as the indication of a 'W' sound in their writing, since this combination didn't appear in Latin.
That's also why 'William' in French is written 'Guillaume', and why 'ward' and 'guard' mean the same thing.
