Gay pride flags etc, why rainbows?

Like the title says, Why rainbows? I dont see the connection between homosexuality.... And rainbows? Anyone know what it is like this?

From what I understand, the reason is to express the diversity within the gay community. There can be gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, etc. Basically, any colour of the rainbow in sexual orientation!
Stupidly I always believed it was sort of homage to Judy Garland, who appears to be a darling of the gay community.

Gavroche's answer makes more sense though!

yes, I think just a suggestion that you don't have to be either black or white (which in this context means straight male and straight female, I guess)
