Suggest a reason why wind speed is much faster several metres above ground than it is just above the ground.

I think you're going to get a lot of people posting here wondering why they should do your homework for you...

It's because lower down the wind is under the influence of gravity.
More to do with the general roughness of the ground causing a drag effect than with gravity
I agree with heathfield. Roughness is most likley the answer.
Friction of wind with the ground, nothing to do with gravity.
Hey, I wasn't being harsh... I was anticipating some other peoples answers...
so would you trust our answers for your home work? will we get the blame if we are wrong??!!

i think it has something to do with obstacles...buildings trees etc, although if the wind is blowing in the "right" direction these obstacles can also speed it up!!!
