a right-angles triangle has an area of 20cm2. Two of the sides ar equal in lengh. what are the lengths of the equal sides? I worked it out as 6.3245cm but it seems a odd number.

I agree with you there. If it was a square and not a triangle it would be 40cm2 so 6.3245 x 6.3245 is correct. The third side ( being a triangle ) is irrelevant in this case as it is a right-angled triangle which tells us each of the two main sides must be equal.
Not sure why you say that two of the sides must be equal because it is a right-angled triangle. A right-angled triangle can have three sides of differing lengths....
