Make a volcano out of paper mache' or plaster of paris around a 1 liter plastic soft drink bottle placed on a board. For effect, our kids paint the volcano violent colors. Take it outside when it's good and dry. Mix one tablespoon of dish soap (ya'll call it washing up liquid, no?) with one tablespoon of baking soda and some red food coloring. Pour it into the bottle. Then pour in about 1/4 cup of vinegar and hurry back several steps! Kids love it, but it's a mess if you don't put it outside... They love to use their imaginations in painting and forming the volcano as well as putting little trees on the sides...

I really don't think this is what you had in mind because it nearly got our chemistry teacher the sack.

He was demonstrating to us how reactions could be triggered by light.

He took a washing up bottle and cut a window in it about half way up and covered that with clear tape. He filled the bottle with water and holding it upside down in a wather trough filled it half with hydrogen half with chlorine.

He then told us to get down behind the desks and lit a piece of magnesium ribbon in front of the window.

There was the most almighty explosion and the room was filled with choking hydrochloric acid fumes.

We thought he was dead, people came in with fire extinguishers, then through the smoke loomed this massive figure crying "That was a good one wasn't it?"

Like they say - don't try this at home!

LMAO !!

That's hillarious - god bless crazy science teachers .... Happy days !

Put a bottle of Fairy in the microwave, in a metal pot and wait for the bang!
It is most likely that this was the old demonstration of bubbling hydrogen gas through soap solution or for more explosive fun a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.

This was widely practiced, but due to H and S it would not be allowed now.

aha Elecrochem - that definately rings a bell.

I believe that is indeed the demonstration that i was thinking about.

Many thanks & hope that we're all having a great weekend!

My science teacher filled an old ovaltine tin with hydrogen from the science lab taps (good old natural gas , none of your North sea rubbish ! ) There was a hole in each end of the tin. When full of Hydrogen , he lit one end of the tin. Flash ! Bang ! Brown trousers ! The tin exploded leaving droplets of good old H2O !
