Amonia smell from chimney

Can anyone tell me why when i just pointed the chimney in my loft I get a very strong smell of Amonia

Have you had mice or other rodents in your loft that have been getting into the brick work? The wet 'pointing' might well have brought out the amonia smell from their urine.

probably a reaction between the mortar & soot
