glorifying God, the Bible suggests.
To learn, to be tested, to see what we do with our free will.
Question Author
But the bible was written long after the birth of civilisation.
Question Author
Yes but having gained all this knowledge where are we supposed to put it?
To challenge God, if there's such a thing. ;-)
what is free will anyway. We all have day to day constraints put upon our lives. The rules of modern civilisation are there for our own good as it prevents the chaos that would result..... free will is taken for granted yet barely exists....
I think free will exists in the heart markarla.
Yes.....but not everyone follows the rules of modern civilisation, and that's where our free will comes in.

You have the free will to choose whether you attend church.
Whether you lead a life of honesty or crime.
Whether you gamble or drink, the list is endless.
Very philosophical lou - and hi there - and can't email you!!! Thanks for your brill message though!! xx.
the bible was written after birth of civilisation but it is taken by believers that the words contained within were given to the human authors by God, so the message is pre-time let alone pre-civilisation.
as for what are purpose is...that may well be our purpose, to spend your life figuring out that very question. not really sure that anyone ever does.
Assuming there was a creator as depicted in the bible, our purpose would be to live a life of servitude to God similar to what the muslims do now.

The christian teachings clearly demand that we serve no other God and all the world's non-believers were all murdered by the great Flood.

You think any religions are different from each other? You think they have different demands to follow a unique agenda, and speak of them in a delineated fashion? You think the Bible speaks in pre-time? You think a person can transcribe words describing pre-time? You think a person, much less living thousands of years ago, can conceptualize pre-existence? You think our purpose in life is to test our free will? Our purpose is best described by living in servitude to God, similar to what Muslims do? You think the Christian teachings demand we serve no other God, and that the analogy of the flood bears any validity?

What more hogwash can we come up with? The more I listen to current events and bear witness to the consequences of people's opinions, the more clearly I understand that no person can ever accurately depict the true essence of whatever force we are a product of. I assume the null response to these questions until I know the answer in confidence. In other words, nobody should ever even think they are right.

I cannot believe that if the human race was created by a supreme being then all he would want from us is to glorify and praise him for what he has done. A bit egocentric isn't it? A better theory would be to colonise suitable planets in the same way we colonise other countries.
Question Author
And as a footnote once we have colonised these countries such as Australia, India and America we don't expect them to worship us for the benefits we have brought to their countries. Or do we?
Since we weren't created by any of the many gods who claim that honour, the question is meaningless.
I believe that we were created in spirit form first, we came to Earth to gain a mortal body. To also gain a knowledge and an understanding and to see how we choose to live our lives, whether we choose good or bad. Also to experience life as mortal beings. How do you know what joy is unless you've experienced sorrow.
We have to experience death in order to become immortal.

That is my personal belief, i'm not saying that it is correct, but it is what i believe in my heart
It seems that a group of like believers, some time back, poisoned their mortal bodies so that their real existances could go back to the stars with a space ship following in the wake of a comet.

Seems no more ridiculous than many other ideas involving religion or god.

oh, by the way, why would something bright enough to creat all we see around us need to have a bunch of slack jawed apemen adoring him/it????
ed
We are simply the result of the creation of the universe.all the elements in our bodies are the product of super nova explosions.Life started on this planet because conditions were favorable ,not because some one stretched forth his hand and said "let there be life". The only purpose for our existence are the goals we set for ourselves.
