Bit of an dissagreement here at home, the wife thinks when you jump out of a plane, free fall then deploy your parachute you fly upwards. Where i think this is just an illusion as the person filming the jump doesnt deploy so carries on falling at a higher speed compared to the person who deploys thier parachute.

What is the correct answer!!!!

you do not fly upwards. You fall at a slower rate so to someone next to you who has not pulled their chute it will appear that you fly upwards.
If it's any consolation, ma mum keeps saying the same thing...
It's a bit like throwing something from a speeding car, ie it appears to go backwards.
becca_andy, you are exactly right.
Agree with all that - you are right. How does your wife think you can fly upwards?
I have done a parachute jump and I can assure her you carry on falling, only slower!
