Dog Poo

A friend of mine has rented out a property and against his better judgement has allowed the tenants to get a dog. He went round last sunday and the garden was covered in dog poo (he counted 40 deposits).

He spoke to the tenants about it and they said that
1. It would fertilize the grass, and
2. They couldnt pick it up as the weather was too bad.

Now, personally I think they are taking the p*ss. Firstly, this is dog poo, not horse manure and I fail to see how it would help the grass, in my mind it would destroy it and secondly, I would think that if the poo was picked up as and when it was done then the weather would not be an issue, also for 40 poos to be there, the weather must have been atrocious for a number of weeks!

What is your take on this, I have never had a dog but feel that their excuses are exactly that, excuses! What should they be doing? what are the ramifications of this, both health and 'environmental'.

I agree with you, I have a dog, and clean the garden daily, it takes about 5 minutes, the poo will ruin the lawn and make the area very smelly indeed, there is no need for people to neglect their responsibilities like this!! you can buy a doggy loo quite cheaply which will solve the problem, as long as they can be bothered to clear up!!

Thank you welshlibranr, I didn't want to 'stir' any trouble between my friend and his tenants but equally I didn't want them to fob him off with pathetic excuses. I think the thing that annoys me most is that these tenants claim to be animal lovers but, as you state, are neglecting their responsibilities, I saw the state of the garden and I was shocked, if I were a neighbour I would have been complaining and what the poor dog makes of it is anybody's guess.

it is **** to use weather as excuses. my puppy still need poo and **** in out garden, i always get rid the poo straight after that. also use water to spray the ground, otherwise if warm day, could smell awful!!

My next door neighbour has a dog that craps in her garden and she never bothers to clear it up and the damn thing does it next to my fence, so I have to spray it with disinfectant to keep the stench down in the summer months. She lives by herself and is quite capable of doing it but is too lazy all round.

Their 'excuses' are a load of pooh! I would have it professionally cleared and then send the tenants the bill-if they don't pay it-they're out!! Leaving it is a health hazard-I hope they don't have kids-yuck!!!

Gosh warpig , that's disgusting I agree , as you know , I have a large dog and , even though it's difficult , I do a "poop scoop mission " each time after she has been out and I pick it up each time .I can imagine how awful it would be with even more than 2 deposits in my garden .

I have 4 big dogs so you can imagine how bad my garden would be if I didn't clear up on a daily and sometimes twice daily basis, even if it is p'ing down it still gets done, so using the weather as an excuse is very lame.

I agree with your sentiments-the tenants are taking the p***...Or poo, if you will...
I can't understand why anyone with a dog would leave poo just sitting there. I pick our dog's poop up straight away when he goes in the yard. What an unpleasant environment it must be for the dog, to have to sidestep its own poo every time it goes out.
Most dog poo is full of "waste", whereas horse and cow poo is mainly organic. I don't think they should have a dog if they can't be bothered to clean up after it. If they disrespect their own environment so much, I can't imagine them bothering to pick up after the dog if they take it for a walk.
I hope that the dog doesn't become ill, but perhaps that the owners do.
As a landlord, I would deem that unacceptable behaviour, and a failure to take care of my property. This would be reason enough to begin a procedure of staged sanctions against tenants. I think though that it would depend on the contract that your friend drew up with the tenants.

Thank you all for your feed back, I thought it was unacceptable but wanted the opinion of dog owners. I will pass this info on to my friend and let him deal with it. Worst thing is that he knows these people socially and that is the only reason he agreed that they could have a dog as he trusted them, the end of a beautiful friendship perhaps?

Hi leelapops, I am just fine and dandy thanks, getting to grips with motherhood, am now an expert on all things poo/pee/puke related!!!!! They dont tell you about the 3P's in hospital. Hope all is well with you.

If they don;'t pick it up, it will start to smell and also attract flies, which will fly into their home, so it is in their interest to pick it up. Also it will get trodden in by either them or the dog and walked into the house. If the dog has not been wormed, and I guess not as they don't seem to be very dog orientated, then the worms will live in the poo and a child or other animal may ingest the worms and this can cause health problems. It would take so long to biodegrade, and also the dog will not poo in the same place, so the whole garden will become full of sh*t.

Thanks lankeela, I will pass this on, he showed me a picture phone photo and it looked pretty bad. The grass is only about 20' by20' max and I could clearly see it all over the place and you could tell that some had been there for a while as it was 'weathered'. Dread to think what the smell would be like in warmer weather. The thing is that they got this dog from the pound so I would assume, possibly wrongly, that the people there satisfied themselves that they were capable of looking after the dog and understanding its needs and their responsibilities.

Hiya warpig!!

I have a dog and I clear up after him at the end of everyday! I have 2 children that would like to play out in the garden when the weather is warmer and I keep the garden clean for their sake aswell as mine and the dog's. I think it is sheer laziness that they haven't picked it up!
Murphy is walked 3 -4 times a day but still 'goes' out in the garden, I normally pick up 2 or 3 piles out the garden a day as well as the ones he does when we goe out for 'walkies'.
I always have a bunch of nappy bags with me, it only takes seconds to pop it over your hand and pick up the poo! I often offer my bags at people that I see out and about that don't pick up their dogs poo and just smile sweetly at them and say 'I noticed you must have run out of bags, here have one of mine' 9 times out of 10 they turn round and go and pick it up. I have had a couple of them get obnoxious on me but I can give as good as I get! Lol! I think those that can't do the simple task of picking up poo should not be allowed dogs! If they are letting this bit of simple care slide then what else are they doing or not doing!

Well by my calculations, if the dog pooed in the garden 3 times a day that means they hadn't cleaned up after it for about 13 days! I really dont think they can use the weather as an excuse as it only takes a minute or two to clean up. You have a good point when you say what else are they doing/not doing. I know these people too and part of me thinks they want a dog as a companion to love but they are not prepared to take the 'bad' with the 'good'.

My friend says he has received a text from them saying that it has been cleared but I think he will need to make an unexpected call with them to know for sure and also he will need to check out the state of the garden even if it has been cleared as I am sure the grass has been damaged. and who is to say that they will not revert to their old ways. Atcually I feel quite sorry for the dog as it cant be pleasant for it, having to tiptoe through its own poo. Poor thing.
