In your body, you have enzymes that help break down food.
The same kinds of enzymes are in biological powders -- they help break down the food you spill on your shirts!
This is why bio powders are used at 40 degrees C or below. Above, and the enzymes die.
Environment: I don't think either are much different. Just wash at as low a temperature as possible. Arial (bio I think) can be washed at 30.
Possible issue: I think some people find clothes washed in bio powder to be more 'itchy' than non-bio.
