If a powerful laser light was pointed to just miss the sun would this bend the light noticeably?

Yes. Einstein's claim that light was affected by gravity was proved by observing a group of stars in the night sky, then observing them again when they were close to the sun. The stars seemed to have changed their position, showing that Einstein was right.

Yes as heathfield says.Just to add, the effect was first demonstrated during a solar eclipse. The light was bent according to Einstien's prediction.
