What's happening to the limescale in my kettle?

A couple of months ago a very strange thing happened to the limescale in my kettle. It just fell off in huge bits!

Ever since it has been building up again - still with some small bits coming off but then today huge chunks came off again. They seem to have just come loose and you can slide them out until the kettle is pretty much limescale free.

Does anyone know why this happens. I've never seen it happen before.

It is a sign

It's only a sign if it breaks off in a lump the shape of the virgin Mary.

Possibly some sort of coating on the inside of the kettle that stops the lime scale binding to it, or very well polished or smooth stainless steel so again the scale can't bind to it.
