Abstract, Mart Feldman is not alive. He died in 1982. Marty Feldman had a condition called Graves' Ophthalmopathy as a result of hyperthyroidism, a disorder of the thyroid gland.
It's more common than you think and you'll usually find a few people in most towns with the condition although it might not be as severe as that suffered by Marty.
In my late teens, I used to go for a few pints to a local pub with my dad in which one of the regulars had the condition. To make it worse, his face was a white as chalk. He told me once that he was so self-conscious about the condition that he hardly went out in the daytime.
