I have always used a good quality proper paste brush. Paste enough wall that is just wider than one strip. The brush is then also handy for applying more paste when having to cut round awkward shapes if it has dried at all and also for running down the underside of the edges of the paper before finally finishing with a wallpaper brush. have a clean damp cloth always available to remove paste from unwanted areas.
I'd go for a brush as well... simply because washing a roller out is more hassle than washing a brush out !
Roller is fast aand easy.Used for pasting walls in the trade for wide vinyls and a brush for the edges.
At the end of the day use what youre most comfortable with .

I'm in the trade, & agree with legend. I also use a roller for pasting-up normal wallpapers, unless I've got a lot to do, then out comes the pasting machine.
