No the comet in 1956 was the first naked eye comet visible in the Northern Hemisphere since Halley in 1910

NO ? Please explain as info shown indicates visible in NW sky in evening or am I decieving myself of my recollection and that I did not see any of these comets going from west to east at that time
Well you said early fifties

So I rather presumed you meant before 55 at the latest.

Are you sure you mean a comet?

You can't see a comet moving across the sky during one night. It appears as a smudge against the night sky and appears to move with the stars during the night.

It moves night after night slowly getting brighter and fading.

Meteors or shooting stars appear to fly across the sky, these are small particles hitting the Earth's atmosphere and burning up. They can happen any time but also come in showers at certain times of the year.

thankyou j-t-p. I meant over a period of time and the time would be right I said early fifties as you say but the fifties 56 answers my question have a nice 2009 and again many thanks
