why do obejects that are unnderwater always look deeper than they look

Underwater objects appear less deep than they really are because the refractive index of water (1.3) is higher than the refractive index of air (1.0) causing light from the object to change direction on leaving the water. We assume that the light has travelled in a straight line and so we misjudge the position of the object.
