smallest cuts hurt the most!

why isit that the smallest often paper cuts and thorn cuts hurt the most for there size.

i sliced my finger open (accidently) and there was loads of blood but apart from not being able to move it properly for a while it didnt hurt much. but when i got a little thorn cut on my hand it hurt more.

but obviously if you get a huge injury it'll hurt more but i'm comparing a papercut or thorn with something like when i sliced about most of my middle finger open.

All the nerve endings are close to the surface of the skin - that's why grazes hurt so much and paper cuts.

yeah but my finger slicing went quite deep.

but sometihng like that still goes through your nerves and more than just the endings don't they so they should hurt more.

As weeal says....superficial cut leave the nerves exposed but intact.........hence can transmit pain.

Deep cuts divide the nerves and hence cannot transmit pain.

Not to complicate matters too far..........with deep or extensive trauma, the body has the capacity to produce it's own morphine -like drugs called endorphins in an attempt to relieve pain.

Urggh Squad, is that how people can cut their own limbs off to save their lives if theyre trapped?

yeah i've heard of stories about soldiers.

they get their legs blown off they wake up and think there in a hole and try to get out then when they come around properly they realise there legs are missing

I sprained an ankle once. It hurt like crazy!

I broke the other ankle later on & it didn't hurt a bit!

Go figure?

PS: The ankle started hurting after the surgery though.
