Is it Venetian (Murano) glass ?
They have a habit of doing that.................
Question Author
Not sure if actually Murano but that sort of thing. I've got lots of glass but never heard of this. What could be the cause ? It was a bit frightening!
Have you had it long ?
A lot of the 'tourist' glass mass-produced in 1960's/1970's was less..........erm........well-made than you would usually expect.
My mum had some 'exploding' murano objects which is why I know.
And they were placed in different areas, etc. around the house.
It could have been inadvertently knocked at some time, and received an unseen hairline crack which eventually gave out - or perhaps it could have been stressed by extremes of temperature? It's on a windowsill, but is it also over a radiator?
Question Author
Have had it for 2/3 years. There is a radiator but it's not close as it's a bay window. I just hope other things don't do the same. I guess it could be the funny weather (air pressure) But feel a bit better that you guys have known this happen. Thanks!!
If it was my dish, I'd just assume there was a fault in the glass - that's the most likely explanation, I'd have thought.
If it was warm on the house side and cold nearest the window this could set up enough stress across the glass to break it, especially if there was already a stressline or minor fracture in the glass.

The dish is now wrapped in newspaper and in a bin liner outside. I'm wearing my crucifix and chewing garlic. Not a hot day just windy and wet like the rest of GB. Thank your all for your input.
