OK, so what, chemically, is NaOI? Sodium oxy-iodide? Never heard of it.
Never heard of NaOI. Are you sure you have copied the homework question down correctly?
Perhaps it said NaCl not NaOI

Yup,it is NaOI although i don't know what you call it.
We get NaOI when we react iodine with sodium hydroxide.
it is called sodium oxyiodide

3I2 + 6NaOH = NaIO3 + 5NaI + 3H2O

because oxygen's oxidation number is -2,if there are 3 oxygen atoms then the combined oxidation number for O3 becomes -6 , that, coupled with the -1oxidation number of iodine makes the total negative charge to be -7.However, there is only one sodium with an oxidation number +1,therefor,the the +ve and -ve charges are not totally cancelled out and thats why i think NaOI3 cannot exist.
NaOI is chemically analogous to NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite) The I in NaOI is not charged. However the OI ion carries a charge of -1. Perhaps you wish to know the oxidation state of the iodine atom?

Some wierd answers so far! NaOI iused to be sodium hypoiodite, now sodium iodate(I). The OI ion has a charge of -1; the iodine atom has an oxidation state (sort of charge) of +1

Sodium iodate is the sodium salt of iodic acid. Formula: NaIO3. MW: 197.89 CAS Number: 7681-55-2

Sodium hypoiodite is the sodium salt of hypoiodus acid. Formula: NaIO MW: 165.89 CAS Number: 22468-64-0

Hypoiodites behave both as reducing and oxidising agents. This behaviour results in them rapidly disproportionating into iodites and iodides. However, Sodium hypoiodite, is not sodium iodate(I), whatever that may be.
