A more general term is speleothems.
Stalactites and stalacmites are specific formations of the mineral travertine.
I believe travertine is the rock, which is made up of the minerals calcite and/or aragonite, both of which are composed of calcium carbonate.
Also, I believe it is spelled stalagmite.

I was going to explain it was 'mainly composed of the mineral calcite', however, I believe my words got transposed when I edited it down.

Stalacmite (sic) is, obviously, a typo.

It is, indeed, spelt 'stalagmite'

Anything else?

Marlon Brando, Susan Dando...you've got ot have a system....
What has Marlon Brando got to do with anything?  Have I missed the joke?

Stalactites are the formations of rock that hang down from the ceiling of a cave or whatever place. Stalagmites form upwards from the ground.

Easy way to remember:

C = Ceiling (stalaCtite)

G = Ground (stalaGmite)

or stalctites hang "tite" to the ceiling and watch out for stalagmites because you "mite" trip over them.

The way I remember which is which:

Stalactites hang down tightly

Stalagmites build up mightily

It's like having ants in the pants the mites go up and the tights come down.
