Do you know a good way to get the lacquer coating off brass? Some of my brass door knobs still look as good as new after many years, but others look a mess where the lacquer has become scratched. I need to get rid of the lacquer without scratching the brass. I've tried meths and white spirit, and neither works.

Standard Thinners.
Beg or buy some from a local car paint supplier.
Soak them in it in a cool ventilated place ... It stinks!
There are other methods described here.
Don't forget that if you take the lacquer off the brass will tarnish in the air quicker.
