Can someone explain to me why my guitar amp is talking to me? It appears to be picking up some kind of radio frequency, and the guitar maybe acting as an aerial. How does this work?

I know what you mean, my son gets the same effect when operating his dvd player, it sounds like air traffic control. I'll also be interested in any theories.
I had that too! I found moving the amp around to another location stopped it. Probly interference.
evp!
your amp connectors and wiring can function like an antenna. They pick up radio signals that are broadcast in your area. Mine used to pick up the police if they were parked in the car park at the rear of my house.
There is a Radio Frequency Shield for your cables. This will stop your connecting wires from picking up these signals.
Hope this helps
Thank you Fern57. Much appreciated.
