I am contemplating buying some imitation rubber snakes to deter birds such as woodpigeons from seedlings. Do they work?

How about an effigy of a hawk attached to a fence post?
You might attract those huge snake eating bids they have in africa,try the gardening thread,it ain't science.

Those fake snakes work well on my boat. They keep the seagulls away.

String with little bits of silver paper seem to work well.
Bang some pegs in the ground around your seedlings and then wrap around some old casette or video tape, works a treat.
