I always assume that a very bright star seen first thing in the morning or last thing at night is Venus. But apparently its Jupiter

I should have said " star "
That's a bit weird that. I ummed and ahhed about doing a part time IT degree through JMU a couple of years ago, even going as far as having an initial interview.

One of the first units offered to get some credits under your belt was an astronomy unit which could be completed at home.

...Aah well maybe when I retire.......
It's Jupiter
. . . and just in case anyone has been led astray, in answer to the question, Jupiter (and Venus too) is a planet.

Currently Jupiter is close to the Moon (and Uranus is there too)

Yes it is the planet Jupiter and should be directly under the moon tonight.

Have you got very steady hands eddie as I just looked and all I can see through my binos is a wriggling worm! It is also of course the hunters moon tomorrow night.
The green comet Hartley 2 is visible with binoculars at the moment too. It's near Capella in Auriga. I can't see it though - it's raining!
