can I get re-infected whilst on antibiotics?
3 Answers
I had a caesarean 5 weeks ago and last week I had to go into hospital as my wound had become infected and an abscess had formed (and burst as it happened). I was on IV antibiotics for 24 hours and then went onto oral antibiotics (Augmentin) and I was discharged after 3 days. Whilst I was in hospital I also had ultrasound scan to make sure no more abscesses in pelvic area and an xray of abdominal area as I had been constipated+++ before going in - both scans came back clear.
I'm still taking antibiotics 3x a day and run out on saturday. My wound is still bit open and weeping a little but generally everyone is pleased with it.
The trouble is I've been really anxious since I've been home that another abscess might form or that I might develop another infection and that all this good work will be undone. I don't really have anything to base this on other than my tummy still feeling sore on occasion and a general fear that this could all happen again.
Is it possible to get re-infected whilst still taking antibiotics? And shouldn't I be given more antibiotics until my wound has completely healed?
Thanks x

I had 2 sections and found that the wound does take quite a while to heal. I still had a little bit of scabbing at the ends for a couple of years afterwards. It will still be painful for a while, you then get a bit of ache/pulling as the scar tightens. Remember, there are a number of layers of tissue that have been cut through, it's not just a surface wound. Given your experience with the infection, I am sure that you will be quite anxious, that's understandable. Just trust your judgement and in particular I think that it is burning pain that you need to watch for and just keep it as clean as you can. Your midwife/health visitor should be able to check it for you as well as the doctor.
