I've devised an energy creating programme using a sustainable, enviromentally friendly source that the UK seems to have no shortage of - the unemployed!

There will be dedicated sites in every town fitted out with exercise bikes that people will have to do a stint on. Maybe 'hard house' type music will be piped in to help create a 'condusive work environment'. This energy will provide electricity for every home in the UK.

Can anyone tell me how much electricity one person could generate in a 2 hour stint? I need these figures before releasing my government white paper to the, errr, government/

You might get up to 200 Watts.

Sizewell B is about 1800 MW

So about 9 million people per power station

As theres about 2.5 million or so unemployed I think your scheme may be beyond practicality even allowing for George Osbourne at no. 11

One flaw in your plan ... wouldn't employing them (in its literal sense) to do cycling make them 'not unemployed' ... the lights would go dim pretty quick when the unemployed ran out.

it would be worded slightly differently as 'giving something back' not work per se. We'd have TVs in their so they dont miss Jeremy Kyle.
Do you think there are enough Scottish people to keep the show running long enough so I have enough power to cook a roast dinner?

we may have to tell the Scottish to pedal slower due to power surges etc.
You think buying shares in Greggs might be a wise move ... I'm planning ahead, you see.
The problem is, booldawg, that the unemployed seem to have quite an appetite for energy. Their 50 inch plasma TVs with cinema style SurroundSound I believe consume about 5 kilowatts per hour (more during Jeremy Kyle because of the “bleeping” needed); their X-Box 360s must take another two Kw. Add to this the power needed for two or three microwave ovens to heat their TV Dinners and another Kw or two to power the chargers for their mobiles (three each), i-Pods, and portable DVD players (for use when they are away from the Plasma TVs, in the kharzi perhaps) and you’re looking at a hefty requirement.

All these facilities will have to be provided at the cycle dynamo work stations you are setting up. Failure by the authorities to provide any one of them will immediately see a “Yuman Rites” case launched.

On top of this separate facilities will have to be made for gay, lesbian and transgender participants. They cannot be expected to share the same space as “straights” for fear of persecution and harassment. (Cries of “Dykes on bikes” spring to mind).

Are you sure you’ve really thought this through properly?
