Siemens Stuckert fan

Does anyone know anything about this (table) fan? It dates to about 1925.
I really just need to know how to wire the base mainly. It has a speed control lever, and appears to have a ground cable that hooks up to the side. From the motor, down, there are two cables. both of which connect to a round plate. The plate has some cables running in and out of it, mostly to serve the speed control (and running up into a big standalone metal block, a varistor or something?????).
Any help most welcome. I'm just wiring a british plug and cable into it, and don't want to fry myself. Thanks.
