Expenditure on School Education

Taking rounded figures our school education budget each year is about £2bn.

The number of school children attending state schools is approx 10m each year.

By that reckoning each child is allotted £200 for a years education.

Where can you buy a private education for that amount? Are state pupils getting a raw deal from the exchequer? Is it any wonder that a privately educated child has an advantage in life?

The total education budget for 2010 was £85bn. If you exclude the really posh ones, most private schools spend less per pupil than state schools. The advantage that pupils at private schools have is parents who know the importance of a good education.

2bn???? were did you get that figure? It is well known that it would be cheaper for the state to pay for private education for everyone! Of course that would be impractical but the figures are clear.

As Tim123 has said, the budget is much higher than that. The figures I have found are for 2009 ( http://www.ukpublicsp...on_budget_2009_2.html ).
8 billion divided by 10 million gives an average figure of £8000 per child per annum. Break it down further to secondary education and the figure will be much higher than that. Not bad IMHO.

You are all right!. I can't find the report that stated £2bn but on reflection it does seem very low although I was not referring to higher education costs.

However what I really was getting at was the comparative costs of state education against the private costs.

It turns out that if all the money invested in state education was given out for all youngsters to have private education it would be cheaper.

The Rev Tim Hastie-Smith, chairman of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference, claimed that fee-paying schools work out cheaper because millions of pounds of public money is spent on bureaucracy.


His claims come as research for the Independent Schools Council found state school education cost at least £9,000 per child per year. The average cost of putting a child through private school is £9,069 per year, but some charge less///
