Can working in an environment containing a lot of electrical equipment be detrimental to health? Can it cause cancer and has that definitely been established?

No, there is no proof to this effect.
(unless you read the daily mail, then everything gives you cancer)
No problem provided you keep your aluminium foil hat on.
Shiny side out though, otherwise it will be reflecting all the waves back inwards!
Workers in power stations work for decades near conductors carrying currents tens of thousands of times higher than you are ever likely to encounter in normal life. No effect on the health of thew workers has ever been detected. There is some evidence that magnetic fields may speed up the healing of wounds and the repair of broken bones but this is I believe anecdotal, so no proof yet either way.
